Youth & Education
… Where Leaders Grow
Initiated in 1994 to meet the social needs of families living in St. Nicks’ buildings, our Youth & Education work is now a fundamental to our comprehensive community revitalization efforts. We currently serve over 3,000 children, youth and family members annually in partnership with local public and charter schools, Beacon Community Centers, a housing development, and Brooklyn’s oldest settlement house.
Our work is rooted in the history and philosophy of the community development movement – we believe that healthy communities are necessary conditions for growing young people and that their development is the responsibility of the entire community. Thus, we operate in genuine and deep collaboration with the major influences in a child’s life including peer groups, families, and schools. We strive to strengthen these bonds and bridge any existing gaps in order to weave a strong web of support for our youth.
Our work is also rooted in well-established youth development principles and practices. All programs are characterized by trusting, caring relationships with peers and adults; youth engagement and input; and a sense of belonging and community. We create holistic programs to promote the intellectual, physical, and emotional well-being of our youth while building upon each individual’s inherent value and strength.
Continuity is a hallmark of St. Nicks youth programs. Many of our youth start with elementary and middle school after-school programs and then progress to high school internship or work opportunities. Through long-lasting trusting relationships, we create a “home” space where youth can try new things, make friends, learn new skills, find their inspirations, and grow into our next generation of leaders.
